What We Walked Into

June is when mosquito activity really starts picking up around Greater San Angelo & Midland. Once the heat settles in and we start getting those warm evenings, I usually begin getting calls from homeowners who can’t comfortably use their backyard anymore.

Earlier this month, I got a call from a family just outside Midland. They told me they were getting bitten every time they stepped outside, especially near the patio and around their back fence.

When I arrived, the first thing I noticed was how active the mosquitoes were around shaded areas of the yard. Near the patio furniture and along the fence line, there was constant movement once you stood still for even a few seconds.

There were a few low spots in the yard holding water after irrigation, a clogged gutter section near the back corner of the house, and thick shaded vegetation along the fence that created the perfect resting areas during the day.

The Problem

One thing I explain to homeowners all the time is that mosquitoes don’t need much to become a problem. A very small amount of standing water is enough for them to breed.

During the inspection, I found several areas where water had been collecting without the homeowner realizing it. One of the biggest issues was a flower pot tray behind the patio that had been holding water for days. There was also moisture sitting inside the clogged gutter section, which gave mosquitoes another ideal breeding spot.

The shaded parts of the yard were also working in their favor. Mosquitoes avoid direct sunlight during the hottest parts of the day, so they tend to settle in cool, protected areas like bushes, tall grass, and dense vegetation. Along the fence line, there were several spots where they could easily rest and stay protected until evening.

The homeowner mentioned they had already tried citronella candles and store-bought sprays, but the problem kept coming back. That’s usually because those products only deal with mosquitoes temporarily. If the breeding areas stay active, new mosquitoes keep replacing the ones you get rid of.

What made this frustrating for the family wasn’t just the bites themselves. It was the fact that they stopped enjoying their own backyard.

The Process

The first thing I focused on was identifying and reducing the breeding areas around the property. That’s always where mosquito prevention starts.

We emptied and addressed all standing water sources we could find, including the flower pot trays and low-drainage areas. I also pointed out the clogged gutter section so it could be cleaned and stop holding moisture.

After that, I treated the property with a targeted mosquito application focused on shaded areas, heavy vegetation, fence lines, and underneath the patio where mosquitoes were resting during the day.

At Pestmaster, I always focus on more than just immediate relief. Mosquito control works best when you combine treatment with environmental changes that make the property less attractive to them long-term.

I also walked the homeowner through a few adjustments they could make moving forward, especially with irrigation timing and yard maintenance. Small changes can make a big difference with mosquitoes because they rely heavily on moisture and shelter.

Throughout the service, I explained what I was doing and why. With mosquitoes, it’s important homeowners understand that prevention is just as important as treatment.

The Outcome

Within a few days, the homeowner noticed a major drop in mosquito activity around the patio and backyard. When I followed up later that week, they told me the difference was especially noticeable in the evenings.

Before the treatment, they couldn’t sit outside for more than a few minutes without getting bitten. Afterward, the family was finally able to spend time outside again without constantly swatting mosquitoes away.

The kids started playing in the yard again, and the homeowners told me they actually enjoyed sitting on the patio after sunset for the first time in weeks.

That’s usually the biggest thing people want back — comfort. Most homeowners understand mosquitoes are part of summer, but they don’t want them taking over the entire yard.

The homeowner also stayed on top of the prevention steps we talked about. Once the standing water issues were handled and the resting areas were reduced, the mosquito activity stayed much more manageable.

DIY Advice

Before I left, I gave the homeowner a few simple things to stay consistent with that can really help reduce mosquito activity around a property.

The biggest one is eliminating standing water whenever possible. That includes flower pot trays, buckets, clogged gutters, bird baths, and anything else that can collect water after rain or irrigation.

I also recommended trimming back thick vegetation and keeping grass from getting overgrown. Mosquitoes like cool, shaded places where they can rest during the day.

Another thing we discussed was irrigation timing. Overwatering can create damp conditions that mosquitoes thrive in, especially during warmer months around Greater San Angelo & Midland.

A few days later, the homeowner told me they had already started checking the yard regularly for standing water and noticed it helped them stay ahead of the problem instead of reacting after mosquito activity built up again.

Professional Insight

I always tell homeowners that mosquito control is different from a lot of other pest issues because the environment plays such a big role.

You can spray mosquitoes temporarily, but if the breeding conditions stay active, they’ll continue reproducing nearby and coming right back.

That’s why professional mosquito control usually works best when it combines targeted treatment with identifying the conditions allowing the activity to continue in the first place.

In some cases, homeowners can reduce activity quite a bit on their own by staying consistent with water management and yard maintenance. But when mosquito populations become constant or start making outdoor spaces unusable, professional treatment can help break that cycle much faster and more effectively.

Closing Thoughts

Most mosquito calls I get around Greater San Angelo & Midland start the same way, “we can’t even enjoy being outside anymore.”

If that sounds familiar, it’s worth addressing early before the activity builds up through the hotter summer months.

Sometimes small changes around the property make a huge difference, and other times it helps to have someone come out and identify what’s really keeping the mosquitoes active.

Either way, I’m always happy to help point people in the right direction.
